After the Drought

Rain falls outside my window
The rain is falling down
The dove, she dances on the wire
Her wings, they flutter about
The wind moves through the trees
We know not how it comes or goes
But while the squirrels are still vying for nuts
There's something that I'd like to know
I wanna know all the plans you have for me
And I wanna know how bad this might hurt
And I wanna know, my God, how it pleases you
To return, to return these bodies to dirt
The sun shines through my window
The sun is shining now
It sure can change a point of view
When you have lived through a drought
With morning there comes a pull
Like an ancient signal fire
The day's work lies ahead
And that fire will not be put out
I wanna know all the plans you have for me
And I wanna know how bad this might hurt
And I wanna know, my God, how it pleases you
To return, to return these spirits to earth
