The Undercut

I kept locked away
Every little thing I shouldn't really say
Afraid they'd learn I planned it out this way
I had obviously been shown the options
No one had chosen still
I saw the box and then I saw the hill

I am making the undercut
I am sealing my big mouth shut
I am keeping it all wrapped up
Playing it unusually safe
And you know that I don't agree
I don't want a choice burdening me
I've no choice now but to compete
Or I'll end up in an early grave

And if I become
The far off island where no one else can swim
I'll see my dreams get taken by the wind
So now I'm betraying
Those with breadcrumbs
Because that's all they would give
For once maybe I thought I'd like to live

This cut has now become so deep
And my tired hand begins to twist
To pull this blade out from my heart
Only to find it in my fist
And you know that I disagree
With the choice that they've given me
And I didn't want to compete
But I'll take my share if they insist

I am just the next meal
They'll keep me until I'm fat enough to kill
Even though they've already had their fill
But for now I'm safe
And soon enough I'll get my sweet chance to fill
A space inside the box or on the hill

I am making the undercut
I am keeping my big mouth shut
I am keeping it all wrapped up
Playing it unusually safe
When the greed has corrupted me
And I'm living luxuriously
But I can't bargain myself free
Heaven help me find a better way

And if I become
The far off island where no one else can swim
I'll see my dreams get taken by the wind
But for now I'm safe
And soon enough I'll get my sweet chance to fill
A space inside the box or on the hill
