Protagonist

Two in the morning songs are drifting through my head
The words are muddy, but the melody's clear
Been hanging pictures on the wall up above my bed
I won't admit it, but it's lonely in here

My head is swimming in a bowl of alphabet soup
I read the letters, but they don't make sense
I'm really hoping that sleep will find me soon
All of this thinking makes me feel so dense

But these people in my mirror
They just ain't amused
They won't even look me in the eye
I can't see my face because it's turning out of view
And all of my birds they take to flight
So I just close my eyes

And follow voices as they twist and turn their way
Through recessed corridors of my mind
They lead me deeper where no torches light the way
And I'm still not sure what I'm hoping to find

Call up the captain, tell him something must be wrong
The laughing stars connect the dots on my face
Ain't California, but the hours seem so long
I'd be surprised if I get out of this place

But these people in my mirror
They just ain't amused
They won't even look me in the eye
I can't see my face because it's turning out of view
And all of my birds they take to flight
So I just close my eyes
