The Tinkerer

Billy as a kid got picked on
His legs were just too long
He'd run with the kids in the fields all day
But they never got along

One day the kids went runnin'
They got stuck in a bog
Well that's where their stories ended
Except Billy's, his goes on

Now all the kids look like Billy
Their long legs runnin' every day
The kids have no fear of runnin' through fields
And the tinkerer tinks life away

Well Billy had a son named Bobby
As natural a swimmer could come
The other kids out runnin' in the fields all day
While Bobby swam laps around the sun

The rains brought floods to the rivers
And they're faster than you can run
The currents that day swept them away
While Bobby was just having fun

Now all the kids swim like Bobby
Their long legs swimming every day
The kids have no fear when rains appear
And the tinkerer tinks life away

Now Bobby's new neighbors have rifles
And they like the look of his hair
His long legs can't outrun their bullets
And only a flood would make it fair

So they grow up in chains and fences
To let them know that they care
Their purpose is turned to production
And fetching a price that's fair

And the neighbors are all dressed up in Bobby
While Billy turns in his grave
While the tinkerer puts down his toolbox
In awe at the madness he's made

Yeah the tinkerer puts down his toolbox
In awe at the madness he's made
