Dad

Today, my feet are heavy
I've noticed how old I've become
I take a look at my daddy
His boyishness, his stories full of fun
I owe him everything
I'm the proudest son

I used to loathe him
He was the only one I'd blame
When I see him now
I'm filled with the deepest shame
I think of all the years wasted
Playing the hatred game

We sons need a father to rage against
I rebelled for years and years
Our wars were quite intense
Tears of rage & existential fears

But it's so obvious now
We're both very much the same
We share the same passions
Not only the same name
Seems we are both sparked
By the same flame

Like Telemachus in the Odyssey
I hope you are the happy old man
Be as strong as a yew tree
Consider me your biggest fan
Please don't ever leave me
& get as old as you can

Old man, what is there left to say
Except for one obvious last wish
I'd like to exit that same day
On which you'll make your way
