Grandpa's Boy

The phone goes off across the room in a dim blue light
I'm learning telekinesis, I practice every night
Sometimes my blood will vibrate with the white noise on the screen
And I have to control my breathing, so I don't make a scene

And the hardest part of living is maintaining a steady balance
Of love and hate and indifference, in a general state of absence
But I've got a coat, and a fresh pack of smokes, ready for imminent disaster

My grandpa used to put a folding chair beside our beds
He was scared that we might fall off and crack our little heads
One day he surprised me with a pen that writes in space
When he died, he couldn't recognize me from my face

And the hardest part of living is maintaining a steady balance
Of love and hate and indifference, in a general state of absence
So I bought a coat, and a fresh pack of smokes, coming for all you bastards

Floating on the edge of a candy-cotton dream
You're sitting beside me eating sea-salt iced cream
Then I woke up in a cold sweat and I puked inside my sheets
Sure takes a toll on the body, but it's worth seeing you at peace

So let's start a little fire, with the money the in our pockets
It might keep us warm at least, long enough to build a rocket
We'll search the different planets till we find a little diner
Where we can settle down, out here, it seems a little quieter
