Refining his guitar sound

(What?) I've been working, uh, insidiously
On, uh, certain kinds of sounds using certain kinds of guitars
And amps, like, just
I wanted to let go past the heavy metal kinda thing
Power cording, um

What I wanted out of it was to have
This real powerful thing, that is really big but wasn't distorted
And, wasn't trying to overwhelm you
And wasn't, uh, uh, that sounded user-friendly
Put it that way, you know?

Big, bad approach, bone-straw, and clean sounding
And that's what I was puttin' a lot of time and effort into
And I want to record it like, like it was a fine watch
That is to say, the basic tracks were all just bass drum and guitar, period
And running through the whole album
That's the only continuous instrument
Except for "Suzanna Fact," where guitar start comin' in

But there's never two rhythm guitars going on at once
There's never a piano on a guitar straight through
It's always a guitar-bass drum straight though
Other things come in, and-
And they had to be recorded
'Cause there's all the space, so, you know
If you do it badly, someone would say
"That sounds big and empty"

And that would be a drag if somebody said that
And, uh, I wanted it to be huge and magnificent
And you could move around in the space
And listen to things 'cause you can
You know, it's not a very complicated record
And it's really so simple and minimal, you know
That, uh, you should be able to hear every part
And the way they work
