Peter and Annie

Peter and Annie bought a lemon on sale
They planted it deep, but to no avail
There were no lemons in the orchard that year
The seeds died deep where no one could hear

After the winter they bought trees from a man
He pulled them all out of the back of a van
Behind their house they buried them in rows
And as spring found breath they watched as they rose

Peter and Annie sat with backs to the world
They'd count all the leaves that were starting to curl
Spring had gone and summer grew old
No lemon was found, there were none to be sold

Another year passed and Annie became frail
Peter would walk while holding a pail
Hoping yellow would fill up the air
But there was no fruit to be found there

The trees were taller than ever they'd been
Peter sat watching the days move again
A single lemon grew on a limb
If Annie weren't gone she'd have loved to see this
But Annie was gone so Peter went and picked it
