Down a Ways

I've never met a winter in the month of May
I've never sailed a river to find a different way
Back to where I came from, back where I could stay
I hope that I return there, but I doubt I'll have a say

I hope to plant a garden and I'll let it watch me grow
I'll sit and wonder where the roots will choose to go
I'll spend my time collecting things and find someone to show
The little things that remind me of a place I'll never know

It's down a ways and over a hill or two
It's down a ways and a wade through river blue
It's down a ways, my friend, it's down quite a ways

I feel most myself when I'm in a clear lake
I feel it in my fingertips, an ever-familiar ache
The water holds me gently even when I'm not awake
And it sparkles ever brightly as the day begins to break

I'll catch a train and ride it down a ways
Catch a train and I'll ride it down a ways
Catch a train and I'll ride it down a ways
