Billionaire - Commentary
Nancy Sinatra became a huge inspiration for this record
There was something about the sound of the guitars
The vibe in general that when I was choosing studios, you start to think, is this the right place?
Should I be here?
And when I was saying, is this the right studio?
I look up and see that Nancy Sinatra had actually recorded in this studio where I was
And it felt like a really positive sign
Now, this song "Billionaire" was recorded, the whole song was on an acoustic guitar
But we were really missing that sparkle
So, it was incredible
This guitar man, who's an absolute legend, called Brett
He's from Australia and he brought a 1950s acoustic
That had this sparkle that the song really needed
So beginning and end, the piano was just me and just playing around, and Mark let it record
And we ended up keeping it
And of course, then I asked the wonderful Sally Herbert to add her sparkle in the strings
In the intro and the outro which were kind of an organic moment that happened
In "Billionaire", it was really important to me, that I had a male voice
That was super deep and said, "I'm gonna make myself a billionaire"
And I asked incredible team from Trilogy
I asked Tony to step forward and could he please use his incredible dulcet tones
And, uhm, say those words in the chorus
