London Town

I dreamed a dream of paradise
As I slip and slide through city streets
Passed a thousand crazy eyes
Away from all the marching feet
Strangers' faces all turned down
Their hearts and minds all shades of grey
No colours here in London Town
And another day just slips away

A man in rags calls softly
To all the rushing passers-by
They turn their heads so they don't see
The pain inside his pleading eyes
The skin beneath his tattered clothes
Crawls with hunger every day
The winter chills him to the bone
And another day just slips away

Every day from platform two
Crowds of people pack the train
There among them me or you
May see each face but know no name
No one dares to say a word
Though they all have so much to say
These people live in separate worlds
And another day just slips away

Another cloud drifts slowly by
And the rain falls in heavy drops
From the dark and velvet sky
That hangs above the chimney tops
Slowly weeks turn into years
And nothing changes day to day
But the cup grows full of lovers' tears
And another day just slips away
