The Staircase

There was a time before I had seen the staircase
Gullible minds they wind up in trapped in that place

Didn't ever stop to think
'Bout whether what we saw in our minds was true
Or maybe we just didn't care
We thought we knew in time what we had to do

All the time scheming
He would just beam ambition
Trusting too deeply
In his stupid vision

Trees whispered to me
Couldn't subdue me too much
Used the illusions
Often times as a crutch

When currents pushed him far away
So close but yet so far to his wildest dreams
The dream grew into something else
The harder he would paddle against the stream

He said Daisy please sweetheart
Paradise awaits if you bear my dream
I got all you've ever wanted
And all we ever wanted to be
If he'd looked back he'd
See the truth
Why should he?

Biding his time
Resenting the tragic hold-up
Immature children
All just playing grown-up

She needed time to
Reach her final decision
He had great faith
She'd understand his vision

The echoes rang across the bay
Nervous now but totally justified
Built up to a fever pitch
He told me sometimes I just want to go run and hide

There was a time before we'd all seen the staircase
Gullible minds we
Wound found ourselves in that place

Trees whispered to us
Words went right through our granddads
Illusions invaded
Turned us into nomads

The currents became terribly strong
All could see it was insane to persist
At this point he had given too much
In hindsight in was such an obvious twist

Daisy please sweetheart
Paradise awaits if you bear my dream
I got all you've ever wanted
And all we ever wanted to be
If he'd looked back he'd
See the truth
Why should he?
It ain't gonna happen
But that don't mean it's all just a lie
