The Witch

Taught by her mother in the arts, rode on animals, men and dead things
Travelled to meet and greet and serve her lord, the evil Master
She was given ointments to heal, to fly over fields and take the grain
Sucked up the sap and threw it back to bring misfortune, bad harvest

The witch's bonfire flared on the hills
She fled south to escape the flames
Hired to share her ancient wisdom
And was paid in kind with meals

When old, scrawny, grimy and crooked the minister told the gathering
Not to seek her service for help or to bring her food and gifts
The Witch in anger sought revenge, took communion along with the rest
In secret she spat and despised when the holy name was spoken

In the woods she met with her Master
He gave to her a cursed black seed
She placed it on the pathway
On which the minister used to walk

In the following morning as the minister prepared his speech
It was obliterated from his mind; he knew at once whom to blame
A warrant issued for her arrest, she was taken to the castle vault
In the hearings she sat silently, as the evil one stopped her tongue
Then the vicar came to her, taught her in the doctrine of bliss
He induced her to come clean and she confessed to all her crimes

Sentenced to be beheaded
And executed on the gallows hill
They say she was repentant
As she entered the realms of death
They say that she was fearful
As she met the eternal rest
