The Woods Grew Up Around Me

My memories live down a winding dirt road
Caught up in cabins and paths to the lake
Lost in the walk-in and found in the barn
Resting on couches from another century
In these woods I grew up in
These woods that grew up around me

We'd gather on summers
Or on New Years Eves
To spend time with the trees
That held all our secrets safe in their leaves
And we'd slurp champagne from the bottle
And giggle Auld Lang Syne always off key
And I'd watch the world grow up
In this world
Where the woods grew up around me

My memories have a permanent address
Home to first kisses and first fights
The box in the sky
Dark paths walked without flashlights
Sunsets watched with my head on your shoulder
Days became shorter and nights became colder
And time that was timeless
Suddenly passed
Even things that last forever
Don't always last

Because the hardest part of being a grown up
Is being grown up
Knowing last year really was better
And this year won't be the same
But if I miss my memories
I know where they'll be
Singing songs by the fire pit
Always slightly off key
Deep in the woods where I grew up
These woods that grew up around me
