Daedalus Writes...

Dear Icarus
Before you go
A million cautions could be said
But you already know

Take what you've learned
Don't be afraid
You have all the tools you need
And you know how they're arrayed

And now you fly
Don't forget

There might not be a right or wrong way
To the clear horizon
There might not be a way
To navigate the storm

And the light can burn as sure
As the darkness can obscure
Your path into the air
The leaps and bounds to get your there
The advice you kept, that you ignored
Every liberty you could afford
And I know, a part of you would always be wild
After all, you are your father's child

So far we've grown
In times apart
Raucous or asinine
Or just a bit closer to heart

But all you've faced
Has lead to here
Through setback and mistake
And yet you persevere

And now, you go
Don't forget

There might not be a right or wrong way
To the clear horizon
There might not be a way
To navigate the storm

And what you take is all
The running jump, this controlled fall
Grace and persistence through
This trial and lack of recompense
Painful valedictions paint
This work of art, of life, of feint
And I know, you were never rank and file
After all, you are your mother's child
