This Hill I'll Die Upon

I'm getting older
Still learning though
But if I could go back and share a few words
With the boy I used to be
This is what I'd say

Like our knowledge of the oceans
There's things not figured out yet
But when it comes to this here living
This hill I'll die upon

That you are good, you are good and you are trying
Though sometimes you forget
You are good, you are good there is no striving
Just lessons you haven't unlearned yet

I grew up believing things I don't now
Like black and white religion
To heaven or to hell
But people get mad about healing
And I still see that pattern repeating in me
It's radical to say love wins
It's radical to say
That seeing God inside ourselves is healing and not a sin
It's radical to say love wins
It's radical to say
All the things that kept me "good" were missing the whole damn thing
But I care enough not to make claims about God
Cause

Like our knowledge of the oceans
There's things not figured out yet
But when it comes to this here living
This hill I'll die upon

That I am good, I am good and I am trying
Though sometimes I forget
I am good I am good there is no striving
Just lessons I haven't unlearned yet

I still have times when I question this view
It's not hard to find darkness too
With racial hate and police states
Info so numerous that justice can escape
Children encaged and the steps we take
To convince ourselves of things so that we don't lay awake
Hoarding more from the earth and poor
Stoking our fears so that we just ignore
All our contradictions, like first we blame the victims
And then we play the victim when it suits, especially Christians
With justless wars, against gays and more
The price of all these lives will never be accounted for
Yes there's hate but that's not our default state
We've been set against our bodies
But it's rebranded as healthy
So yes fight the systems and our roles we play in them
But see how we've turned against ourselves in the first instance

And dance
Sing
Feel
Everything

Dance
Sing
Feel
Everything

We are good, we are good and we are trying
Though sometimes we forget
We are good, we are good there is no striving
Just lessons we haven't unlearned yet

Like our knowledge of the oceans
There's things not figured out yet
When it comes to this here living
This hill I'll die upon
This hill I'll die upon
