James

I ran away from home back when I was still young
Me and James made the trip from Rockford to Madison
We carried all our quarters in a little glass jar
And we broke it when we needed cash to buy gas for the car

Well, I got tired, but James didn't wanna stop
So we parted ways on main at this little diner shop
We divvied up our quarters and both of us got half
James started for the north and I headed back down south

It was years ago, but I still wonder why
I let James go it alone
If I would've just stuck by his side
Maybe he would've made it home

I heard it on the news as soon as I got home
A boy about my age had been cut down by someone's gun
It happened in Montello, I figured it to be James
That boy knew no one there and no one there knew his name

It was years ago, but I still wonder why
I let James go it alone
If I would've just stuck by his side
Maybe he would've made it home
