On the Farm

We had to cancel all our season's plans
Though it didn't seem right complaining
We thought that we'd try living off the land
If we had music that's the main thing

We cleared the barn, set up the studio
Between the finch's nest and the feed mill
Thought of the empty stages back at home
Said "if no one's playing then we will"

In day we wrote
In night we sang
Our fingers creaked to the freezing rain

And all the while
Like the city trains
The world hummed distant and deep in pain

We didn't have a plan when we began
We just wanted to do what felt right
But stories always form to pass the time until sunrise

With no one there to pull our focus away
It sheltered us from pressure and from harm
We made a record we could only make
On the farm
