Hitchhiker Girl

She was seventeen
And swore she was a queen
Wished her parents all the best
She quit the cheerleading team
And pursued her dream
Of seeing the American West
I loved her much
And I miss her touch
But so does the whole damn town
It's been seven long years
Since I've seen my dear
And I don't imagine she'll come around

The only girl I really knew
And it still makes me blue
To think that she just might be gone
We grew up together
I remember days in summer
Having picnics in her front lawn
Where the kids used to play
In the house her pa made
I kissed her the first time, upstairs
Her Mom and Dad were once in love
But now it's all push and shove
Cause she up and left without any cares

Over time, she's climbed mountains
Tossed pennies in fountains
But none of her wishes came true
She went too long without hope
So she went to the dope
When we were young she used to sniff the glue
She'd always paint against the grain
Drive in the left lane
She never did what she was wanted to do
I knew that one day she'd be gone
And her perfume would linger on
I didn't know that just one day could come so soon
