Longleaf Pine

Your spark started below my pines
And you grew up my trunk in my eye
I fell in love with your burning bark scent
Wood sap drenched is easy to ignite
I love the way you burn through my roots
In solemn shame the flame struck a pose
The green pruned black and my roots came to speak
You burnt your name on my rough jagged bark
You can be smooth and taste prickly pear sweet
If my crown burns then at least we could speak
Your fire leap high and drowned out the sky
We danced like criminals stealing banks of lies
We saw the flowers cripple and die
And soon enough mother earth will cry
And you'll wither down into a swath of black flies
And the green can spread and the storms can rise
What I couldn't see now reflects from the eyes
Of a longleaf pine whose crown stood high
In the fields that you rise because before I didn't know
Now the skies open wide and the thunder can grow
And the wildfires die cause before I couldn't see
But since you're far away my pines can wait and sway
