Bike Ride

Biking down the street
On a cozy autumn day
But someone's going to die
That's all there is to say

He had lived a long life
That was nearing its end
He knew his time was coming
He just did not know when

He couldn't pedal hard
But pedal as he did
He thought about his son
Who now took care of him

The days are like poetry
The days are like poetry in that way

He smiled at the dogs while he was on his way
A baby in a carriage, while he was on his way
A new life was beginning as an old one faded away
When he took his last bike ride on a brisk November day
Who knew that his last day would be exactly like today

He waived at a stranger
No reason just because
The sun was in the sky
Just where it always was

This day had no beginning
And this day had no end
Everywhere he went
He made himself a friend

He came across a lake
And parked his bike to see
The waves that kissed the shore
And a swan that kissed a bee

The leaves they fell from trees
And blanketed the earth
You see in every death
Begins another birth

The days are like poetry
The days are like poetry in that way

He said a little prayer while he was on his way
A seed became a forest while he was on his way
An old man saw it all before he faded away
When he took his last bike ride on a brisk November day
Who knew that his last day would be exactly like today

The clouds were turning pink
On a backdrop of maroon
The old man on the bike
Saw the old man on the moon

The wind was now a chill
So he threw on his hood
Perhaps a cup of soup
With tea would do him good

He went inside his home
And put the kettle on
With a smile on his face
He hummed his favourite song

He gave his son a hug
And headed off to bed
This would be the last time
He ever laid his head

And as he closed his eyes
He thought he heard a sound
Though he was hard of hearing
There was music all around

He sang and danced with angels while he was on his way
They freed him from delusion while he was on his way
A new life was beginning as an old one faded away
When he took his last bike ride on a brisk November day
Who knew that his last day would be exactly like today
