Clown

Let's take a moment, consider the clown
Glazed-over eyes and a big grease paint frown
Holes and bad posture in her old coat gown
Mostly-dead flower in her top-hat crown

Shell blow up balloons and twist them into hearts
Pretend not to bleed when you rip them apart
She'll paint your face make you a work of art
She'll give herself to you in tiny parts

Every performance gives pieces away
She knows she'll run out of pieces one day
Falling apart but she's too scared to say
She knows it hurts but she needs you to stay

She lacks the good fortune to disappear
Whenever you look she is never not here
Wearing a smile stretching from tear to tear
Smelling the roses and stinking of beer

Let's take a moment, consider the clown
Steaked make-up cheeks and a big grease-paint frown
But if you stop and ask why she's so down
Blue make-up tears will run so deep she'll drown

She'll have no answer she won't make a sound
She'll scuff her oversized shoes on the ground
She'll dodge your eye-contact turning around
She'll disappear and she'll never be found
