Soiled Gifts

You've unknowingly inherited a broken planet
Dystopian throats, choke on granite
And banquets of flesh, serve what we bred
Because birds, herds, birches are worth more dead
Money is your God here, we've normalised luxury
Refined poor on how you gratify your gluttony
Gaped a chasm between the rich and the broke
Akin to the gorging pull of a black hole
We sacrifice time, on alters of industry
Accept credit here for all types of misery
You and I, will be survived by institutions
That create problems, commodify solutions
We expand... at the motherland's expense
Marvel at her ruins, whilst muffling her breathe
But for all our needs, views and stress
We're just flawed beasts trying to do what's best

Kneeling to makeshift kings
Kissing jaded rings
Can't forsake our things
Clutching scared sins
Reaching for wayward dreams
Don't know what they mean
Desires made to seem
That which we gravely need

Welcome aboard, this ship of addiction
The fish are dead or dying, I think that we're sinking
Nets tangle fiction, information overload
Rowing into Roanoke, hoping Croatoan spoke
I'm drowning in a crowd in our nations capital
Wondering how much of this tangible stress really matters at all
Guided by a fraudulent significance
Blind to the many forms of our malignance
You were born to the warring twenties
Disease, hostility, scorn and frenzy
Products, of iPad child care
Choked by digital glares that reside where
Innumerable hands plea and vie for you attention
Grab, pull, scratch for a like or a mention
But for all our freedoms, trials and pain
We're just lost sheep trying to find our way

Kneeling to makeshift kings
Kissing jaded rings
Can't forsake our things
Clutching scared sins
Reaching for wayward dreams
Don't know what they mean
Desires made to seem
That which we gravely need

What a disappointing heirloom, this soiled gift
We mishandled the packaging and spoiled it
This is yours now, it's set to self destruct
The world was ours, it was never enough
I ashamed I had a hand in setting that timer
Painting over cracks with a discounted primer
Wiser ones than me, have picked apart the seams
Of this society and all that it means
You were born amidst a mental health crisis
A product of our pressures, expectancies and vices
You see a mind designed to find food and shelter
Breaks when confined to this modern helter skelter
But I felt a shift, a monument has rift
When you two came in to existence
And until the stars defuse and loose their light
And this darkness broods and consumes this life
I will love you!

Kneeling to makeshift kings
Kissing jaded rings
Can't forsake our things
Clutching scared sins
Reaching for wayward dreams
Don't know what they mean
Desires made to seem
That which we gravely need
