Pigeon

It started with a crumb

I cast onto the lawn when lunch was over
It tumbled down and settled in the clover
Then all at once the scavenger descended
The start of something I had not intended

Rat from the skies
With sinister eyes
Deep in my heart, I felt disgust
It landed that day
Like it was there to stay
Right from the start, I didn't trust
That Pigeon

The next day it returned with friends aplenty
I reached the crust... there must have been twenty
And there it stood: out front, the clear ringleader
Aloud I said: get lost, I'll never feed ya

So then they attacked
A bread-hungry pack
They still drew blood, though I covered my face
Viciously pecked
My fingers were wrecked
Left in the mud, because of
That pigeon

It felt as though I'd nearly died
So I swore an oath unto the sky
Unconcerned by passers-by
I declared I'd bake it in a pigeon pie

But a PTA member had seen my outburst
This dreadful week had somehow grown even worse

Thanks to that snob
I'm out of a job
Although I can't teach, I won't admit defeat
I'm keeping my oath
I've purchased a loaf
When I lure it in, I'm gonna eat
That pigeon
