George Washington (A Life)
In 1732
On a cold February day
George Washington was born on a farm
In Pope's Creek, VA
As he grew, 'twas math he liked
Then, drafting, mapmaking, and
Later, he became an expert
In surveying land
At 19, George joined the militia Against the French, he lead
To drive them from America
So Britain could rule instead
George inadvertently began
The French and Indian War
At Jumonville Glen, his force attacked
Leaving no survivor
A General now, at 26
George married Martha, then
With lands owned and inherited
Was among the wealthiest men
By Martha's late first husband
Two children joined the family
A boy, Jacky and a girl, Patsy
More was not to be
George Washington, the father
Of the USA
A farmer, general, president
The first to lead the way
When war broke out in '75
His battles, lost and won
When France assisted, at Yorktown
War ends in '81
George presided over
The Constitutional Convention
He recommended all to sign
Without dissension
His Presidency in '89
Began his economic sway
He started taxation, oh
And thanksgiving day
Many begged George to remain
To serve a second term
He kept the US neutral, but Against pirates, he was firm
George retired from public life
In 1797
Two years later, December 14th
He died 'tween 10 and 11
He's on the quarter dollar
And he's on the dollar bill
This is to keep him in our hearts
And be respected still
