Baggage

When you winced at conversation
That I didn't understand
It seemed so harmless on the surface
And I failed to comprehend
What we haves an aggregation
Of the troubles we've been in
But the pain that hurts the hardest
Is from baggage that we bring

I'll never know
Your journey traveled just to get here
I'll never feel
The hurt that you've been forced to bear
You'll never tell
About the guilt you have that festers in the night
You may seek comfort in the shadows
But there's healing in the light

I read your poetry last evening
Every word of it was sad
It was like a somber recitation
Of everything that could go bad
It was like you celebrated sorrow
And embraced it like a friend
Like a crazy dreadful comfort
Of knowing how your book will end

I'll never know
Your journey traveled just to get here
I'll never feel
The hurt that you've been forced to bear
You'll never tell
About the guilt you have that festers in the night
You may seek comfort in the shadows
But there's healing in the light

If you can really wipe your slate clean
The last straw is just a straw
Without foreknowledge of you heartbreaks
I'll only feel I caused it all
I pull back in consternation
Because I cannot read your mind
The greatest gift that we bring forward
Is baggage that we leave behind

I'll never know
Your journey traveled just to get here
I'll never feel
The hurt that you've been forced to bear
You'll never tell
About the guilt you have that festers in the night
You may seek comfort in the shadows
But there's healing in the light
