Crust

Breaking through the crust of an old reality
It takes great effort to look and really see
That what is on the outside has become stiff and caked
Like the mud that dried in the sun that baked
A mold of the shell of what I used to be
A frozen past that no longer reflects me
A mask that did protect the tender tree
Now it only serves to hinder me
A stone wall that keeps impressions intact
Of a past that can no longer come back
It keeps the world from seeing the me that is new
It keeps me from seeing the changes you've gone through
It keeps me from detecting that you're not who I once new
It keeps me from expressing just how I grew
Breaking through the crust of an old reality
I am emerging anew and free
It's not safe, but it's real
It's hard to trust just how I feel
But I must face the new light
And stand up to a new height
Be scared but not afraid
To reach out with all that I've made
Expanding from within
Exposing my new skin
As I begin
Letting the light in
And spreading it out
