Mortal nesting dolls at midnight twilight
I like to think that
At least I know
The universe knows
Exactly what it's doing
Every critique, kiss, calculated beyond cusps
Of pure randomness
I like to think
The universe had me download this delicacy
Just for you, listener, fellow poet, writer, reader, creative dreamer
To bask in
As we all connect to cosmic consciousness
I like to think that
Everything will wonderfully work itself out
Though there's a creeping down
That sometimes sits
On the lightless hours of night
The pitch black crickets chirping starryless light, pollution
That sometimes waits in the
"Already tomorrow, but I'm not asleep" midnight twilight
But there's a melody to the frogs' croaks
A song of different pitches presented to different ears
Some annoyed and some grown to enjoy the
Sweet-wet, sweat-wet summer
The birds that sing soft symphonies as the sun rises
As my favorite
In those hours where slowly the light seeps in
Through the blinds and suddenly the room feels alive
Painted anew by the rays of new days, new possibilities
I like to think
It's all calculated, counted
Down to the very breaths we take
Unconsciously cocooned in sleep, but we
Are a species with a memory problem
That forgets the vastness we carry in our cells
A whole other universe lies within like
Russian nesting dolls
Painted pretty porcelain pink
I like to think
That I am the universe
One of its many fragmented faces faced
With free will and I will use the ability to
Create my reality to create a rhyme or two or three
Or rhymeless piece of poetry
Because I know why the earth spins
The seasons change
The frogs croak
And the birds dance in unison to the rising sun
I know I exist for love and that love runs
Blindly through my insides
Nurturing every highway of veins
I like to think
I know
The universe knew
Exactly what it was doing
And with that piece of knowledge that I hold
Somewhere within me
I will continue to count my lucky stars
And create and catapult myself into the mountainous terrain of life
As a mere mortal
At least I know
The universe knows
Exactly what it's doing
Every critique, kiss, calculated beyond cusps
Of pure randomness
I like to think
