Bound To Be

I can be nothing more now
In the officer's remand
My mind stays blank as it waits
For the next line of commands
Will subdued by protocol
All new shining metal parts
Lucid when the time is right
To fell enemy ramparts
I access maps and radar
That is stored behind my eyes
Precision movement lightning
Swiftly brings about demise
Deaf to screams, built to appease
Undying thirst for slaughter
Boots that march to unknown end
And knees that never falter

The comfort brought by understanding this world is something I've not felt for some time
Art, philosophy, science
It all offers so much meaning
But now I see that these things are only a reflection of a world with mankind at its helm
A world that no longer exists
Man was blessed with a divine gift
One that allowed us to create beauty and reason in this cold, sterile universe
And in spite of this gift, we live on in a hell of our own
Of my making
We survive as the crippled limbs of civilisation
Lumbering on until we're washed away by a tide of our twisted doings
And I wonder, do we feel shame?
Or do we simply wallow, and question why this evil's come to plague us?
Nowadays I can barely look at my fellow man
I can't decide if it's because of pity or distain
They flaunt their suffering in an effort to inspire charity
But I can't afford to give an inch
In these end times, repeating the sins that have left us here to rot is my only chance of survival
Someday perhaps I'll find a way to live with my selfishness
But not today

It didn't last very long
Now there's nothing left here for you
And all your selfish deeds will eclipse your dim light
Your loved ones lie in danger of suffering for your sake
All in harm's way
Cain, fetch me a gun
We invited it into our home
Now the silicon serpent reigns in Gehenna
And how the flock bleat in sour unison
Legs
Not yet, but pale, translucent stumps
Struggle against the sand
Bludgeoned beneath the sun
Brought to bleed against the coarse rock
We still struggle against the sand
Bound to be

Each night since it happened I've contorted under the memory of every misstep taken
Night falls once more but tonight I'm armed with an idea
I know there must be something else at play here
Like this machine is governed by more than just the three laws
Now to find someone who can weaponise this idea
