The Birthday Card

I had a fantasy today
That you had sent me a card for my birthday
Your curly writing on paper that gave me a cut
It said don't worry dear I'll love you no matter what
Blue birds and rainbows on the front
You said I'm proud of you and I know that this might be blunt
You haven't told us
But when you do
Just know that we will always be here for you
Take your time and do it slowly
Finding who you are
You're on no one's schedule baby
No one's except your own
Stretch your wings and test them out
You're learning how to fly
Do it knowing we'll be down here
With nets and open arms
And then I think I almost cried
From all these feelings I swear had been left behind
But way down deep inside I see a child
That longs to hold you and trace your smile
Even though it's a fantasy today
I'll put a bandage on the cut it gave
And I'll remember
Until it starts to fade
All the words that you didn't say
Take your time and do it slowly
Finding who you are
You're on no one's schedule baby
No one's except your own
Stretch your wings and test them out
You're learning how to fly
Do it knowing we'll be down here
With nets and open arms
Do it knowing we'll be down here
With nets and open arms
