Void

volume one: the scholar

his quest he's searching for more proof
he's heard all the theories he needs the truth
comparing philosophies they all seem flawed
where is the evidence where is God
he will not surrender he will not retreat
in his quest for knowledge won't accept defeat
the hole in his heart expands and it grows
because he denies what he already knows

we've all got voids that we must fill
an ache in our core we try to kill
we've tried it before and we try it still
it never worked and it never will

the warmth in our lives continues to drain
emptiness flowing through our veins
the unknowns and variables remain
and the only thing we can rely on is our pain

volume two: the lover

the child needs love and it's all she can feel
she's seeking a someone whose love is for real
she looks everywhere she leaves no stone unturned
no river left uncrossed, no bridge left unburned
she finds someone desperate, dependent for sure
imprisoned by needs he will bite at the lure
one day he'll leave her, get bored and move on
such true love was fleeting, the lover is gone

the warmth in our lives continues to drain
emptiness flowing through our veins
the unknowns dominant in our brains
and the only known constant is our pain

we all have a void within our soul
a God-sized vacuum a gaping hole
on the surface, beautiful so we're told
but we're hungry angry, tired alone and cold

volume three: the user

the boy's growing up and will soon be a man
his life is lacking something he can't understand
he won't fill this void though he constantly tries
the poison replaces the lows with the highs
the chemicals dampen the ache and the sorrow
he'll drown out tonight and then hide from tomorrow
as long as his pleasure can be a distraction
he won't have to take any corrective action

we all have a void within our soul
a God-sized vacuum a gaping hole
on the surface, beautiful so we're told
but inside we're ugly, naked and cold

we've all got voids that we must fill
an ache in our core we try to kill
we've tried it before and we try it still
it never worked... and it never will
