No Matter What I Do

In the spirit of new harmony I let the women come
To have their big convention and beat the suffrage drum
I thought that they'd be happy with the things I've done before
But, now, both sides insist that they want more

I've always tried to do the things in which I do believe
To be of help to others is the best I could achieve
For the schools, for the farmers, for the rich and poor, the same
But every time I'm praised, I'm also blamed

'Cause the plans made in the morning can bring big regrets at night
I'm trying to be noble, but I'm not seen in that light
The big guns will come at me, and that is nothing new
There'll be a fight no matter what I do
No matter what I do

I know that I could lose this job however hard I try
I can't please everyone of them, the stakes are just too high
I've always done my duty, but that doesn't mean I'll win
The margin of my power is so thin

The cost to stay in office is to give my soul away
Is that a price I'm willing to pay?

'Cause the plans made in the morning can bring big regrets at night
I'm trying to be noble, but I'm not seen in that light
The big guns will come at me, and that is nothing new
There'll be a fight no matter what I do
No matter what I do
