Dark Night of the Soul

It's a hot muggy night, this last battle is so desperate
We're terribly worried, so is the other side
They steal our telegrams, and tap our telephones
I've never in my life been more maligned
Buying votes, telling lies, and spreading racist hate
Anonymous letters, vulgar and insane
They listen at our windows and transoms, too
There's nothing they won't do to bring us pain
Our poll in the House gives us victory
But momentum still could swing
There are lobbies from the railroad
And lobbies from steel
The very last remnant of the old whiskey ring
In this dark night of the soul every shadow is foreboding
My mind is full of doubts and worries and fears
The other side is powerful, they want to mow us down
We must stand our ground and beat them here
Our poll in the house gives us victory
But momentum still could swing
There are lobbies from the railroad and lobbies from steel
The very last remnant of the old whiskey ring
What will tomorrow bring?
