His Own Dancefloor

The sun was never bright, and now it's gone
He shivers in the dark when winter comes
The things that made him smile have turned to stone
The cold that makes him still is in his bones

But in the alleyway, he dances beautifully, and doesn't care
For all the words they said, the bitter lullabies, he finds a way somewhere
Beneath the broken lamps, the cloudy city sky, he turns around
Alone in all the world, alone without a sound, he steps in perfect time

The words upon the page are all he has
He tries to sing, but when he does, he cracks
There's silence in the air, and there he stays
Until he hears the music start again

Then on the rooftop tiles, he holds his head up high, and meets the stars
He sees the lights above, the only map he needs, until the rhythm starts
The people down below are ones he doesn't know, who pass him by
Although he's far from home, he still recalls the songs and dances through the sky

And they've forgotten him, and no one knows his name, and no one sees
There's nothing in his hands, he dresses up in rags, the winter makes him freeze
But when the music plays, he comes to life again, the city sleeps
And heaven opens up to show the angels how a man can make them weep
