Linger

The living room is filled with trinkets and curios
But there's one portrait missing from the shelf
I know it must be in here somewhere
She worries, so it's put away again

A familiar song is playing on the radio
The soundtrack to a very sad time
Not a bad song, but I always try to turn it off
It returns every once in a while

She says I can never dig deep enough
To bury the painful parts
When they surface, just let them out
I'm right here she says, but still

They linger

Out for a ride, no destination
Just a little time to kill
Soon I'll be rolling down a familiar street
No escape on the hamster wheel

Reading a good book, or watching a show
Just sitting on the couch all alone
No magic buttons to turn it off
It returns every once in a while

She says I can never dig deep enough
To bury the painful parts
When they surface, just let them out
I'm right here she says, but still

They linger
