Struggles of the Modern Day
I look around and just see people fighting
Like they think they know it all
How you think you're so wise
That you know what's best for someone else?
Let alone everybody
So long as we don't heal the parts of us that hurt
We will always see an enemy on the outside
Look no one has a monopoly on the truth
How 'bout some humility?
Do I seem OK?
Can you see the shadows on my face?
That the rain won't wash away
From the struggles of the modern day
Hear the cries of the mother earth
Everybody screaming 'bout their politics like put me first
I bet you think that if you're right it'll all be OK
That's the struggles of the modern day
When I wake I find that my head hurts bad
I don't sleep so good, I'm just like my dad
Now it seems this world don't know how to rest
Everyone out there think they knows what's best
Go ahead, explain what is true to me
Turn your heart to stone if I don't agree
Simplify the world witchur your black and white
Justify your rage, tell me that's alright
Ya but I don't see no ownership at all
You looking for a name that you can call
So lemme put a mirror on the wall
Alright?
Alright
Do you feel OK?
I can see the shadows on your face
That the rain won't wash away
From the struggles of the modern day
You can feel the blood pressure rise
Angry at somebody because they don't see it through your eyes
I bet you think that if you're right it'll all be OK
That's the struggles of the modern day
We wake up wondering who we're judging, now who's in court?
We blame our pain on people we see in news reports
The monster under our bed we swear that ruins our lives
That we claim is evil and very different from you and I
Points the way to unfinished business that we ain't faced yet
Emotions that we fail to own get projected as hatred
We've gotta heal our shadows before we go try to fix the world
'Cause wit'out wisdom we can't tell the poison from the pearl
To fix ourselves, that's the dirty work
The glass you're looking through is stained
No wonder you think your word is church
The woke and the alt right are just ideas
And intellectual lines in the sand that we draw wont free us
Self-rejection is hard on our mental health
And when we cancel people we cancel part of ourselves
We need to let the heart and mind recoup
Therapy, plant medicine, nature
Go camping or spend more time in groups
Limit how much vengeance your inner critic is trying to prove
'Cause love in all directions the only way that we'll find the truth
But we'll all be OK
'Cause the sun is rising every day
So please don't chase more pain
With an argument inside your brain
Go outside, it's time to get some air
People that we're fighting on the internet aren't really there
Let's just admit most of the time we don't know what's at play
In these struggles of the modern day
Struggles of the modern day
All around
Like they think they know it all
How you think you're so wise
That you know what's best for someone else?
Let alone everybody
So long as we don't heal the parts of us that hurt
