A Man I Used To Know
Oh my god, Adam
There's handprints on the walls
The windows painted black
There's scribbles on the door
And photos on the floor
Every lampshade slashed
Oh god
Am I standing in glass
Is this even my house
Surely this is just a scene Inside some crazy dream
Wake up, Jess just get out
There's destruction everywhere
The walls are covered with bizarre graffiti and Adam's handprints
A photo of Beckett is taped to the wall with a massive rats nest of scribbles surrounding it
What happened in this place
What happened in his mind
Everything inside feels eerily alive
And dead at the same time
There's something in the air
A sense I can't describe
Like a whisper in my ear
That doesn't want me here
Sends shivers up my spine
I go to the patio because I see something
And I pass broken dishes and it looks like he's thrown Beckett's toys against the wall I'm outside now, in what looks like the remains of a massive bonfire
There's charred books, pillows, clothesI don't know
All mine, all gone
I'm standing in the ashes
Of a life I used to know
Lost to the inferno
Just sifting through the smoke
Every ember a reminder
Of the hold that won't let go
I'm standing in the apocalypse
Of a man I used to know
I need to get back inside
I don't want my neighbors to
Oh my god
Oh my god the neighbors
Does anybody know
Did anybody watch
No time to think it through
The only thing that you can do
Is get out before you're caught
I run upstairs, grab a suitcase and throw in, I don't know what I have to get out of here
I don't feel safe, I'm not safe
Where's Adam, Oh god is he okay
What if he finds me here
I have to go
I somehow think to snap pictures of everything on my way out It's fast It's furious
And I jump into my car and speed away
I'm running from the ashes
Of a life I used to know
Lost to the inferno
Just sifting through the smoke
Every ember a reminder
Of the hold that won't let go
Witnessing the apocalypse
Of a man I used to know
I get back to my parents' house, safe
Everything's where it should be
The walls are clean, there's no broken glass
Okay, okay I'll wait 'til after Beckett goes to bed
And then I'll tell them
I see Mom and Dad out back, grilling
So I pour myself a gigantic glass of wine, and join them Mom says, Hi Honey, do you want
Oh, Honey, you look terrible, what happened
I can't speak
I just hand them my phone and watch
Mom stands, I'll be right back
Mom, we can't be upset in front of Beckett
She goes inside and I take a seat next to my dad
We're quiet for some time
Was he mad at me
How could I have gotten to this point
Everything's changed now, Dad
He takes my hand, and gives it a squeeze
I got you, he says
I got you and I got Beckett
Mom comes back and hands me the phone
I just spoke with Tessi
Someone from Dave's practice will be giving you a call
You'll have an appointment tomorrow
That's great, Mom
But how the hell do you think I'm gonna get Adam to go to the doctor with me You just saw the pictures and I have no idea where he is
Honey, the appointment's for you, just you
You're in crisis and it's time for some professional help
I'm in crisis
I'm standing in the ashes
Of a life I used to know
Lost in the inferno
There's an aching in my soul
Every ember a reminder
That I might face this alone
I'm standing in the apocalypse
Of a man I used to know
There's handprints on the walls
The windows painted black
There's scribbles on the door
