Audio: Final Version.
Alec Lance, a 21-year-old Filipino artist raised in Sembawang, Singapore, faces a personal predicament: let his story fade into obscurity or let it propagate endlessly across the lives of others
Singapore, now a highly developed nation, is home to diverse Asian cultures, primarily Chinese, Malays, and Indians. Known for its technological advancement, advantageous urban planning, and safety and security, it still grapples with subtle issues of a lack of cultural identity, tolerance between differing ethnic communities and building a sense of belonging. To many these issues may seem futile, but are they really?
Alec's seemingly perfect life—a loving family, a good stable education, and in pursuit of a career in music—masked an inner struggle. He realized his music lacked authenticity, prompting further introspection. Despite his family's efforts in finding stability in religion, and relying on traditional Filipino values of home and family, Alec wondered why he'd still felt so disconnected from his identity and place in Singapore. He neither felt like a Singaporean, nor like a Filipino
Curiosity led him into questioning his inner self. Being raised in a very religious family, emotional neglect and detachment, entitlement to privilege, and lack of knowledge in navigating the modern urbanized life, all overwhelmed him. With music unable to express his sudden doubts, he withdrew from it entirely
The invalidation and guilt exacerbated into the further withdrawal from his friends, and even his family within the following years
To this day no one knows his whereabouts in recent time. But I intend to find him soon
