Couldn't Let Go

I think the worst part of this
With you over there and me over here
Is how hard that it is to ever let go

Gasping for breath
The smoke in air with a cold haziness
And a wound in the chest
Couldn't ever let go

Every day that we spoke
We tried to abide with a heartfelt goodbye
Solid ground in our fist
Turned to dust in the morn

In the grave of hope
At the train station home
Can we ever let go?

When you're all alone
And you ache to the bone
Can we ever let go?

I heard your voice break
Last week on the telephone
I wanted to shake every rock, every stone
Just to carry you home
I couldn't let go

So I wrote you this poem
While I'm working alone
With a cold coffee taste
In my mouth just to say
That I wouldn't let go

I'm sorry for the pain
Because I didn't let go
