Kintsugi Heart

When she realized how much of her was gone
Well it jarred her to her bones
Like a dull serrated knife on a tin plate
Her belly full of stones
When she allowed herself to ask where she had gone
It left a canyon full of fear
The vultures that are circling high above
Screaming echoes for all to hear

The bravest thing she had ever done
Was board that train at the very start
But it took all the strength she had
To climb back aboard with a kintsugi heart

When she set out to find her missing parts
She knew she was no more a passenger
It tore cartilage from sinew and from bone
An invisible massacre
When she opened up her mouth to tell him this
Something precious of theirs fell to earth
It was a eulogy for hope a flightless bird
She was nestless but he'd been her home first

The bravest thing she had ever done
Was board that train at the very start
But it took all the strength she had
To climb back aboard with a kintsugi heart

When he told her that she had to make her choice
It was waiting in her throat already made
An assassin of the joy they'd watched fade
Groomed as a cat and lethal as nightshade
Find the beauty not in keeping something whole
But in the reasons that it came apart
You can glue and gild a fissure of the soul
You can cherish a kintsugi heart

The bravest thing she had ever done
Was board that train at the very start
But it took all the strength she had
To climb back aboard with a kintsugi heart
