The Wake

One last goodbye
With failing touch
You held my ring
Returning to ash
We shall meet again
This bed for an ivory urn
Sodden eyes, when prudent
It's all calling me back
Finding age on every face
Coming to
As joy once saved
Is wastefully drawn on

This epitaph will arrive empty
With failing embrace
And an eternal goodbye
Ringing deaf
It's all calling me back
It's all of me
Crawling back

Smiles reshaped as penitence
Memories begin to reform
As grains of sand
Gently slip through hands
Above their resting heads
In our beds
In our dreams
And in our sleep
Still residuum in retinas

This pirouette will arrive empty
With failing steps
And an eternal performance
Stinging blind
It's all calling me back
Dredging these holiest dreams
It's all of me
Crawling back
Finding my way back to the haunting throes of unwanted sleep
