The Wild One

crooked creek stopped flowing
when the wild one stopped knowing
hawks cried fear at his rising
still beneath the leaves
we felt him in the breeze
we heard him in the thunder's sighing

guided by starlight, a student of the sky
knowing no bounds, his spirit now to fly
we loved him like a mother loves her child
but we knew behind his green eyes, he was wild

beneath a rock and Mary's gaze
is where the wild one now lays
above him, dirt grows colder
but the fire in the trees
means the wild one still breathes
an ember left to smolder

guided by starlight, a student of the sky
knowing no bounds, his spirit now to fly
we loved him like a mother loves her child
but we knew behind his green eyes, he was wild
