The Hero's Dose

What do you do when there's nothing to do
You've read every book that said it'd save you
But every word looks dead on the page
I've lit all the candles and said all the prayers
But I'm worried there's nobody upstairs
So I'm eatin and drinkin my troubles away

I feel the darkness drawing so close
I've run out of land at the edge of the coast
In front of me's a demon behind me a ghost
I wanted poetry but all I got's prose
I'm clear in my head and confused in my toes
Like Vonnegut said "And so it goes"
Might be time
Oh it might be time
For the hero's dose

Left on the playground with no mom around
Dad's still at work or maybe out of town
Forty years later I still feel the fear
Trapped between worlds in purgatory
Don't wanna be a slave to my history
I thank my ancestors but I'll take it from here

I feel the darkness drawing so close
I've run out of land at the edge of the coast
In front of me's a demon behind me a ghost
I wanted poetry but all I got's prose
I'm clear in my head and confused in my toes
Like Vonnegut said "And so it goes"
Might be time
Oh it might be time
For the hero's dose

I'll take five gram crackers a cap and a gown
Stroll into church at the edge of the town
And weep before Mary and confess my sins
Then run through the graveyard where my father lies
Tell myself I am healthy wealthy and wise
And sing a song backed by twelve mandolins

I feel the darkness drawing so close
I've run out of land at the edge of the coast
In front of me's a demon behind me a ghost
I'll fly up to heaven with a heartful of hope
Rattle the gates and demand that they ope
And say to the angels give me the most
It might be time
Oh it might be time
For the hero's dose

Hero's dose ohh
I'm gettin close
I'm gettin close
Give me the most
