The Laughing Child

Cloudless sky on a desert day
Laughing as he makes his way
From his tiny little house of clowns
To Sahara dunes to tear them down
Sights set, he's free, unlike me
As I could only wish to be
His path unsure, I wish to see
I follow close in secrecy

And all the while
Change will come
The laughing child with us
Will be one and we'll be laughing
We'll be laughing

Three souls strong, softly
we move along to the motion
Of green, fading red earthen clay
Our father's soul of yesterday
Minutes into hours into days into years
Seem to pass in a moment
We looked in silence and he understood
As only the laughing child could

And he always knew us
He could see right through us
Eyes open wide
He could see us on the inside

So goodbye cloudless sky, goodbye desert day
Laughing as we make our way
To our tiny little house of clowns
Starlit dusk silhouette, desert mounds
Shadows fall shaping light
Upon us close the darkest night
We speak of our day in words of our own
We give thanks to the moon and the sun
And all the while
Change will come
The laughing child with us
Will be one and we'll be laughing
We'll be laughing
We'll be laughing
