Take Me Further

The morning breaks on the outlines of the story
but all I see is just the place where I start
and not a trace in the clear light of the morning
of all the dreams that looked so real in the dark.

So take me further on down the highway
if you can stop and you maybe find yourself going my way
for though the distance is hazy
it looks like I'm on the right way, I believe.

The north field crows scatter and fly past the treetops.
I'd follow them but I don't have any wings.
I'll have to go follow the lines on the blacktop
that twist and turn this way and that to get free.

So take me further on down the highway
if you can stop and you maybe find yourself going my way
for though the distance is hazy
it looks like I'm on the right way, I believe.

The weeds grow up out of the hood and the fenders
of a rusty truck that sits alone in someone's yard.
If it could run I know it would help me get there
but here's good luck making it go very far.

So take me further on down the highway
if you can stop and you maybe find yourself going my way
for though the distance is hazy
it looks like I'm on the right way, I believe.
