Endless Farewells

Out in the woods a pack of coyotes yip and howl
and you can feel the elation and fear mingled
in the success of their hunt, in the prey's life ending.
This world is a place where one thing eats another to survive.

Waking me in the cold autumn dark I listen
and as tears dry on my cheeks I remember
your gentle touch and the day you died.
This saha realm a place of endless farewells.

As the sun rises an impetuous wood duck
ambles out of the thicket; iridescent greens and
blue mix with golden to redeem the world .You
taught me that during the long ago springtime.

I turn and see tall pine green and the memory
of your love is not past or present but beyond the
three times in that mystery where this world's
meetings and partings find their meaning.
