The Story Behind "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"

What you hear on "Girls"
It was a little bit of the music that I grew up with, Motown
Also, in "Come On Eileen," used Motown riff
And that was my favorite song
I mean whenever I felt low
I would go to my apartment and play that song
Or I would play "The Clash"
Music at that point was unbelievable for me
It was, it was so uplifting

I wanted to make music that was uplifting
So I asked Rob to play what he loved and make it reggae
I asked Eric to play Motown riff
They were kind of stunned because
When I went in, I was kind of like a bull in a China closet
I wouldn't do certain things, I wanted it like this
Because I figured if this is my shot, it's gonna be my shot
And I knew I was right about certain things
So I wouldn't let up (when the workin' day is done)

Oh, girls, they wanna have fun
Oh, girls just wanna have fun (girls, they want)
