Precarious

We're walking on a tightrope
Without a safety net
Our lives hang in the balance
But we haven't fallen yet
We're living on the edge
As well as borrowed time
We're dancing on a ledge
And stopping on a dime

The continents are drifting
Tectonic plates are shifting
They're coming to a halt
Along the San Andreas fault
The clock is ticking faster
As we approach disaster

We're hanging from a cliff
And we're hanging by a thread
Beneath the sword of Damocles
One slip away from dead
The ozone layer's leaking
We're skating on thin ice
The finger's on the button
Of a nuclear device

The life we live is perilous
The world is on the brink
It's getting more precarious
It's later than we think
It's taking everything we've got
To barely stay afloat
The grim reaper's on the backswing
And the fat lady's clearing her throat

The water level's rising
It shouldn't be surprising
As we approach the finish
And all our hopes diminish
Expect the cataclysm
With cheerful pessimism
