Live Forever or Die in the Attempt

As we approach the interface
Into the great beyond
The hardest part of running the race
Is letting go of the baton
Will we be the ancestors
Of future generations
Or will they be non sequiturs
Despite our aspirations?

Can we reconcile the schism
Between entity and entropy
Through nocturnal vampirism
Or menstrual lycanthropy?
As we contemplate the chasm
Between hope and expectation
Between flesh and ectoplasm
Between love and desolation

We were forged in a crucible
Of primordial soup
We are irreproducible
And lost at one fell swoop
The phoenix on the pyre
Is a pyrrhic victory
It's not tempered by the fire
It's just rotisserie

There's nothing here to pilfer
There's nothing in the purse
There is no gold or silver
There's just the mummy's curse
As we contemplate the chasm
Between hope and expectation
Between flesh and ectoplasm
Between love and desolation
