Little Chicago Boy - Commentary
Okay, "Little Chicago Boy"
"Little Chicago Boy" is another song that's very like close to my heart and spirit
It's a song based on my father Lonnie "Pops" Lynn who
Who would end off all my albums with a spoken word piece
Ever since my second album
My father passed in 2014, September, so
When Karriem made his music I just, I don't know, I just, it had a
I just felt like the spirit with it, that was like, it felt close to me
And it felt like emotional, so, I started to write like about
Started to write about my dad, it just came out, like how should I begin
This is the story of a boy named Lonnie Lynn and it's really
Like this is just autobiography in a way
This is, I'm talking about my dad
But I'm talking about from my perspective
And not tryna create a human being that was perfect
But telling all his beautiful things
Telling all his quirks and all his things that was crazy to me
But all his brilliant things too
And, uhm, just talking about our relationship and how it feel
How I feel about him and, and you know
How he passed on a strong legacy to me
And, so the song is, is uplifting at the day
But it still emotional, and, you know
Homage, paying honor to, to my dad, to my pops
And Tasha Cobbs, who is one of my favorite artists ever
And just is a great vocalist, gospel singer
Who I listen to her songs all the time
Uhm, I asked her would she be on the song
'Cause I knew she would bring more of
The connection of God and the father, like our heavenly father
Her being a gospel artist and knowing how
To do contemporary music but still keep it in
In that soul of where, you know, spirituals comes from
She sang and she also told me how her father passed
So, it really, it really was a strong connection therse for us, and, uh
I was blessed to have some, some, uhm
Some recordings of my father that I'd never used on any album
That he had actually recorded a couple, uhm, a year, the year he passed
And I put those on there too, so he can still have the outro to the album
As we pay homage to him, so that's "Little Chicago Boy"
